We have a couple updates to be aware of for this week in Akron. There’s quite a bit going on, plus some community updates we want to make sure Akronites are aware of and need your help to bring action to! As always, you can also stay up to date through following us on Instagram or Facebook.
The comment period for the Federal EPA’s Section 129 updates to the Clean Air Act allowing for plastic incineration is open until May 4, 2026. You can email a comment to a-and-r-docket@epa.gov with the subject line “Docket # EPA-HQ-OAR-2025-0068-0001” otherwise it will be disregarded. WM site movement & Community Benefit Agreement
There is yet another development that puts our neighbors in East Akron at risk. The WM (Waste Management) plant is looking to relocate from Middlebury to East Akron. This community already faces so many challenges to their environmental well-being and health directly tied to unregulated pollution in the area. In order to mitigate some of the potential harm AkronCAN, F.A.C.T.S. Akron, and Big Love bkpNetwork have worked together in drafting a Community Benefit Agreement (CBA) demanding emissions monitoring, initial capital investment for community preparedness, interior environmental upgrades, third party environmental inspections and violation consequences, a Community oversight board, and 2% of ongoing gross revenue going back to the community. While we are grateful to the City of Akron for fighting for a CBA, it is crucial that residents have time to voice concerns, ask questions, and be informed of the implications of this move to their neighborhood. To support these efforts, we have an ActionNetwork requesting that the city delay approvals of the current CBA until residents have a chance to read, react, question, and respond.
Volunteer Day: Raise the Fence Party
As you heard in our last newsletter, we are working on Wild Soil Farm in Summit Lake! This Sunday (May 3rd, 2026) we will be working from 12pm-5pm on clearing the property and building a pallet fence. We could use your help! We are planning on organizing more volunteer farm days moving forward (you’ll be sure to hear about them through the newsletter, calendar, and social media)! We will have music, drinks, and food available during the event as well as free trees for Akron residents. The farm is located at 71 Ira Ave (Akron). See you there!
